Tower Crane: Capacity, Jib Length and Site Erection

A tower crane is a top-slewing crane used to lift steel, concrete, plant modules and formwork on construction and mine-infrastructure sites. Flat-top and hammerhead cranes with 40–70 m jibs cover a range of building and plant-erection duties. Capacity falls with radius; select the actual load chart rather than treating the maximum rating as tip capacity. The crane is only as good as its foundation and its erection plan: under-designed bases and rushed climbs are the usual causes of incidents, not the crane mechanism itself.

Maintenance Schedule

Most premature failures in this equipment class trace back to a missed routine check rather than a design fault. The intervals below are a practical starting schedule; adjust them to your duty cycle and the manufacturer manual.

Recommended maintenance intervals
IntervalTask
DailyFunction test of hoist, trolley, slew and all limit switches; inspect wire rope and hook latch.
WeeklyTower-bolt torque sample; inspect climbing frame and ties; check weathervane function.
MonthlyFull rope inspection to ISO 4309; brake air-gap; slew-bearing grease.
QuarterlyStructural inspection of jib and tower; foundation settlement check.
AnnuallyThorough examination by a competent person; load test after any climb or modification.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is tower-crane capacity quoted?

As a load chart: maximum lift close to the tower, falling as radius increases. Tip capacity at maximum jib is the number that actually limits most pours and steel lifts. A “12-tonne crane” that is 12 t at 15 m and 2 t at 60 m will not place a tank at the far corner of the pad. Size on the heaviest load at the greatest radius, not on the headline tonne rating.

Do I need a permit to erect a tower crane in Tanzania?

Erection and operation fall under occupational safety regulation and usually require a designed foundation, a competent-person erection plan and, in urban areas, additional local-authority approvals for oversail. Confirm OSHA Tanzania and municipal requirements before mobilising. Oversail of a public road or neighbouring plot is a legal issue, not just a site convenience.

When must a tower crane be climbed or tied?

When free-standing height exceeds the manufacturer’s chart for the in-service wind and the foundation used. Ties to the structure restore capacity as the building rises. Climbing or tying without following the manufacturer procedure is a common and serious failure mode.
