Wheel Loader: Bucket Size, Payload and Site Duty

A wheel loader is a front-bucket machine on rubber tyres used to load trucks, feed crushers and move stockpiles faster than a tracked excavator on level ground. Mid-size loaders with 3–5 m³ buckets are common on quarry and plant-feed duties; confirm operating load at full turn against the actual model, not bucket volume alone. They need decent roads and a well-prepared pad; in deep mud or on steep pit faces an excavator is the better tool.

Maintenance Schedule

Most premature failures in this equipment class trace back to a missed routine check rather than a design fault. The intervals below are a practical starting schedule; adjust them to your duty cycle and the manufacturer manual.

Recommended maintenance intervals
IntervalTask
Every shiftCheck tyre pressure and cuts; inspect bucket cutting edge and hinge pins; look for hydraulic leaks.
DailyGrease articulation joint, bucket pins and driveshaft; clean cooler cores.
250 hEngine oil and filters; inspect articulation bearings for play.
500 hTransmission and axle oil level; fuel filters.
2,000 hTransmission oil change; inspect rims and tyre carcasses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Loader or excavator for feeding a crusher?

A loader is faster and cheaper per tonne on a level pad with a prepared stockpile. An excavator wins if the feed is a high face, the ground is soft, or you also need to dig. Many Tanzanian plants use a loader on the pad and keep an excavator for the pit.

What dump height do I need?

Higher than the truck body or hopper you will load, with margin. A loader that cannot clear a 30-tonne dump body is a wasted machine. Measure the truck, then add at least 300 mm.

Which tyres for rock?

L5 rock radials, not L3 construction tyres. Rock cuts sidewalls and L3 carcasses fail in weeks on a Geita-style abrasive pad. Tyres are often the largest running cost after fuel, so specify them with the machine, not as an afterthought.
